Welcome to the Volunteer Hub.

Volunteering is an invaluable part of what we offer, contributing significantly to the health and wellbeing of the Northwest community.

Our volunteering roles are as varied as the people who give us their time. Volunteers are found at every level of our organisation from the trustees that steer our strategic direction, to the one-to-one work with service-users. When a volunteer joins us, they become a valued part of the n-compass team.

We believe absolutely everybody has something valuable to offer and we welcome applications from all parts of the community. We see volunteering as a two-way street and that each individual has their own reason to give their time, and we aim to support that reason. You might want to give back to the community, gain confidence after a career break, keep active in retirement, or be looking for paid work. When you first contact us, we will identify your interests, experiences and availability and then match you to a role which maximises your potential and ensures you get the most out of the experience.

Duty Advocacy Volunteer

What does an Advocate do?

Advocates enable clients to represent themselves, where possible, or speak up on their behalf to liaise with statutory organisations as directed by the client. Advocates build and maintain relationships with clients based on mutual respect, dignity and honesty and empower and involve clients as much as possible in decisions that affect them.

Where does the volunteering take place?

We have a number of sites that offer advocacy including Preston, Wirral, St. Helens and Blackburn. Volunteers will also work in the community.

Please note the role may vary slightly from area to area.

What time commitment do I need to give?

Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, volunteers are welcome within these times. Hours are dependent on availability.

What support will I get?

Induction training includes safeguarding, equality & diversity and a shadowing process.

In addition, training will also cover statutory advocacy and coaching. Quarterly supervisions and an assigned mentor ensure on-going support.

What will I get out of it?

Volunteering as an advocate can make a real difference by empowering service users and making sure their wishes are heard. You have the opportunity to build relationships with clients and agencies and gain valuable experience.

Chat Line Volunteer

What does a CHAT Line Volunteer do?

CHAT is our Carers Help And Talk Line, a telephone service that offers emotional support to unpaid carers. It is an entirely volunteer-led service. Volunteers provide a listening ear and emotional support to carers calling the helpline. CHAT Line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What is expected of me?

Volunteers answer calls from home and can give as little as an hour of time a week to be available to answer calls.

Volunteers choose a time-slot on the rota and answer any calls that are diverted to your phone through our communications system; your number remains anonymous. You offer emotional support to callers, working within our organisational policy on confidentiality and safeguarding.

Do I need any skills or qualifications?

We are looking for someone willing to listen to callers and provide emotional support.

Experience as an unpaid carer is desirable but not essential.

Full training is provided.

What will I get out of it?

Supporting carers on CHAT Line can be a hugely rewarding experience.

You will have training and the opportunity to learn and develop reflective listening skills. We will offer you mentoring sessions to support you managing calls.

Citizen Involvment Board member (CIB)

What is the Citizen Involvement Board?

The Citizen’s Involvement Board supports n-compass North West in providing the best possible service to our service users. They inform and advise from a service user’s perspective to help ensure service user needs are met. The CIB is designed to strengthen links and understanding between senior representatives of n-compass and its service-users and community members.

Do I need any skills or qualifications?

We want members who have accessed and experienced at least one of n-compass’s services and who are willing to provide constructive feedback.

What does a CIB Volunteer do?

A CIB volunteer would attend quarterly meetings. These meetings are intended to involve citizens in the development of the organisation’s strategic plans and provide citizens to shape development and inform decision-making through productive feedback.

The views and opinions of the CIB are fed up to the Board through the CEO to help the decision-making process of the Board.

What time commitment will I need to give?

Meetings will be held quarterly, lasting approximately two hours. Meetings will take place at the n-compass HQ in Preston.

In addition, further meetings may be called when necessary to address issues which cannot be accommodated within the regular meeting schedule.

What will I get out of it?

You will have the opportunity to be an active member of a group that can affect change within the organisation.

We will provide induction training during your application. All out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Volunteer Counsellor - Butterfly & Phoenix Projects

What does an n-compass counselling volunteer do?

Counsellors offer up to 8 sessions of counselling to young people (11-18 years) who are engaging in or at risk of self-harming behaviour. This usually takes place in schools throughout Lancashire.

What qualifications do I need?

Volunteers will need to hold a Level 4 Diploma in counselling or equivalent. You will need to be registered with the BACP and working towards Accreditation. Volunteers will need to be competent with IT and using Outlook.

What is expected of me?

You will be expected to manage a caseload of clients aged 11-18 who are engaging or at risk of safeguarding behaviour. This will involve working and travelling in the community, so a driver’s license and access to a car is essential. You will arrange initial appointments with new clients and assess risk, develop and maintain excellent working relationships with schools, and signpost and refer clients to other agencies where appropriate.

Volunteers are expected to undertake day-to-day administration for the role e.g. client notes, and complete and maintain paper and electronic records in line with policy. You will work within the organisation’s safeguarding policy and liaise with n-compass staff and other agencies as appropriate.

We expect volunteers to external, clinical supervision and attend regular case reviews and 1-1 mentoring sessions.

What training and support will I get?

You will have regular 1-1 meetings with mentor to support you. You will also receive safeguarding training and access to CPD courses. The team has monthly Case Management Review (CMR) meetings to support both you and your client.

What time commitment do I need to give?

This depends on your availability.

What will I get out of it?

Counselling young people is rewarding work. You’ll be part of a supportive team of counsellors, gaining hours and experience working in schools. A contribution to supervision costs is offered dependent on hours volunteered.

Lancashire Wellbeing Service (LWS) Volunteer

What is the Lancashire Wellbeing Service?

The Lancashire Wellbeing Service is a targeted service provided across Lancashire, aiming to support adults (18 years plus), families and carers who are understood to have long term health conditions, low level emotional health and with lifestyle or social issues. The service predominantly works with people at high or moderate risk, comprising approximately 20% of the adult population. For more information, please visit http://www.lancashirewellbeing.co.uk/.

What does a Lancashire Wellbeing Volunteer do?

Typically, volunteers support a wellbeing worker to help people across the county deal with underlying causes that are affecting their health and wellbeing. Volunteers offer time-limited support to service-users. Each session will be structured, working towards specific SMART goals.

Other volunteering roles include office-based research and admin to support Wellbeing workers help clients, and partnership and engagement volunteering to promote LWS in the community.

Where does the volunteering take place?

LWS is offered throughout Lancashire. Volunteers will travel throughout their area of the community, or be based at the n-compass office in Preston.

Do I need any skills or qualification to apply?

Volunteers for this role are required to be 18 years of age and over, will ideally have some life experience enabling empathy with a diverse range of service users.

Volunteers need excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to maintain professional boundaries and be supportive in a mentoring and non-judgemental way. High level of honesty and integrity needed.

What time commitment do I need to give?

Ideally, a minimum of 3 sessions (hours) per week between Monday-Friday.

What support will I be offered?

Induction and local training; volunteers will shadow their mentor on visits for a month.

Safeguarding, data protection and lone worker training also conducted.

Regular ongoing supervision is carried out every three months to support the volunteer.

What will I get out of it?

You will gain valuable experience supporting service-users to enhance their health and wellbeing; this provides a great pathway to paid work.

Sitting In Volunteer

What does a Sitting-In Volunteer do?

Sitting-In volunteers allow carers a much-needed break from their caring role so they can do something for themselves. It is essentially a respite and befriending service that is entirely led by volunteers from all ages and backgrounds.

Volunteers spend an agreed amount of time at the home of a carer/cared-for person weekly. Volunteers spend time with the cared-for person, chatting, going for a walk, playing board games or watching TV. This allows the unpaid carer an opportunity for a break and a chance to do something for themselves.

The volunteer does not administer medication or undertake any personal care.

Where is the Sitting-in Service offered?

Currently it is offered across most of Lancashire and in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

What time commitment do I need to give?

This is flexible and usually agreed with the carer, but typically 2 hours a week at an agreed time.

What support will I be offered?

You will have induction training, a ’match‘ meeting to ensure you’re comfortable with the carer and cared-for person. Quarterly supervision and an assigned mentor are provided.

You will be registered with our automated lone worker alert service to protect you while you volunteer.

All out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed, such as travel to the carer’s home.

What will I get out of it?

You will make a difference to a carer’s life by offering respite and this can be hugely rewarding. Often volunteers build meaningful relationships with both the carer and cared-for, strengthening ties in the local community.

What happens when I apply?

You will have induction training that includes safeguarding.

During application, we carefully match you to a carer based on any preferences you both may have, such as location, or interests. We then arrange an introductory meeting at the home to ensure you’re all comfortable.

Once you are matched you are assigned a mentor and we keep in touch with you at regular intervals.

You will be registered with our automated lone worker alert service to protect you while you volunteer.

Triage Volunteer

Triage is the gateway to n-compass and provides the first point of contact for callers and service-users. It is a busy and efficient team, who are in charge of several tasks including triaging and transferring callers to the appropriate service, completing referrals, handling safeguarding issues and uploading data to the CMS.

What does a Triage volunteer do?

This depends on your skills, but much of the work is supporting the triage team, such as data entry and processing information.

Do I need any skills or qualifications?

We are looking for volunteers who have a knowledge of computers and basic IT skills.

Where does the volunteering take place?

Head Office in Preston.

What time commitment do I need to give?

This depends on your availability.

What will I get out of it?

You will be part of the busy and successful Triage team and gain office experience. This can build confidence, enhance your CV, offer a pathway to work and be flexible to suit your interests. You will be appointed a mentor and receive regular supervision.

Office Assistant Volunteer

What does an office assistant do?

This role is designed to support n-compass staff deliver a high quality service. It is flexible to meet the needs and skills of the volunteer.

Do I need any skills or qualifications?

We are looking for volunteers who have a knowledge of computers and basic IT skills.

Where does the volunteering take place?

Predominantly at Preston HQ; we also have offices in Lancaster, Wirral, St. Helens, Blackburn, Rochdale, and Congleton.

What time commitment do I need to give?

This depends on your availability.

What will I get out of it?

You will be part of the n-compass team and gain office experience. This can enhance your CV, offer a pathway to work and be flexible to suit your interests.
