Tips for keeping your mind healthy at Christmas

Christmas can be a stressful time for everyone, but even more so with people who suffer from mental health problems. During this period is important to try and remember to look after your mental health and wellbeing.

Here are some top tips to stay well this festive season

Take a break! Make time for yourself. We all know Christmas can be a very busy time, combining visiting family, friends and social events it can be difficult to find the time to unwind. Whether it is in-between social arrangements or pre-arranging to have a day to yourself, finding some time to relax and unwind is regarded important to keeping yourself well over the Christmas period.

Moderation. It can be very tempting at Christmas to over indulge and use this as a way of covering up feelings. Over-indulging can often lead to negative and guilty thoughts. Try to avoid over-indulgence and try to take part in some exercise where possible.

Avoid social comparisons. Comparing your Christmas celebrations to others can be easily done, especially now social media is a high influential in people’s lives. Comparisons can have a big impact on how we feel about ourselves, try to take a break from social media and television and enjoy your own celebrations.

Talk about how you’re feeling. It’s difficult to admit if you aren’t feeling great at what should be such a cheerful time of year. But if you are struggling, try and find someone you can talk to about your feelings. Talking about your feelings can improve your mood and make it easier to deal with tough situations.

Sleep. Although many of us have time off work over the festive season, your sleep pattern can be easily disturbed. Where you can, try to make sure that you are getting a good night sleep on a regular basis. This can also help your transition back into work when Christmas is over.
